17th Century Kingwood Oyster Cabinet on Stand

  • H: 116 cm (45 11/16")
  • W: 97.5 cm (38 3/8")
  • D: 45.5 cm (17 15/16")

Late 17th Century kingwood oyster cabinet on stand.

This rare cabinet has a walnut top with wide cross-banding and an overhang moulding. The oyster-veneered doors and sides feature isometric cross-banding.

The interior has an arrangement of nine drawers with engraved brass handles and a central door with four further drawers behind.

The whole is raised on a 19th Century low stand with scroll supports, and bun feet with shaped stretchers.

Kingwood originates from Brazil and is a true rosewood. It was used almost exclusively for inlays on very fine furniture and was known as 'prince's wood' in the 17th Century.

Oyster veneer is a particularly decorative form of veneer, so-called because the shape resembles an oyster shell.

This cabinet is a piece of great quality and colour.
