Fine Aubusson Verdure tapestry, circa 1740.
Depicting a large peacock in the foreground amongst wild flowers between 2 trees. A stream meanders from a bridge through the scene.
Particularly fine and detailed border with a cherub in each corner.
Aubusson Verdure tapestries originated from workshops set up between the towns of Clermont- Ferrand and Limoges in France.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Aubusson successfully rivalled Gobelins and Beauvais tapestry.
They generally relied upon engravings, with their most famous tapestries decorated with illustrations drawn from the fables of French poet Jean de La Fontaine. Figures are set against a background of 'verdure' in Aubusson tapestries.
This tapestry has been re-backed with pre shrunk Belgium linen.
