18th Century English Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase
Excellent late 18th Century English mahogany breakfront secretaire bookcase.
This bookcase has a breakfront outline and is small in size. The overhanging and moulded cornice above a plain frieze sits on top. Beneath this are four glazed doors, the original astragal glazing bars arranged in a geometric diamond-based pattern.
Inside each of the cupboard sections are a series of adjustable wooden shelves. The lower section consists of a series of graduated drawers, banks of five to each side and four in the centre because the top drawer, of double height, is in fact a pull-down secretaire.
Inside the secretaire section are four drawers which retain their original brass pulls, six pigeon holes and a central lockable cupboard door with an inlaid panel of flamed mahogany with a strung outline. Having great colour and patination and the metalware is also original throughout.
A sophisticated piece of fine-quality English furniture.
