18th Century Louis XVI Period Decorated Longcase Clock

  • H: 239 cm (94 1/16")
  • W: 65 cm (25 9/16")
  • D: 42 cm (16 9/16")

A high quality 18th Century Louis XVI cream and gilt decorated longcase clock of stylish form.

The foliate carved pediment and trailing swags adorn the shapely case with further foliate carving, on a marbleised plinth base.

Attractive painted interior in dark green.

This clock is testemant to the renowned 18th Century French clock maker, Lepaute.

Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789) and Jean-Baptiste Lepaute (1727-1801) revolutionised French horlogerie.

The pair were clockmakers to Louis XV and eleven more Lepautes continued to make clocks.

Lepaute became a dynasty, with the last clock-maker of that name dying in 1909.

Famously, Napoleon III's carriage clock by Lepaute was given to Queen Victoria after his death and is now at Frogmore House.
