18th Century Louis XVI Period French Mahogany Commode
Exceptional 18th Century Louis XVI/Directoire Period Mahogany Commode, Attributed to Claude-Charles Saunier c.1785.
This beautiful commode is of typical Louis XVI rectangular form with mounts of high quality. The gilt bronze is highlighted with inlaid ebony stringing. This is just one example of the attention to detail that makes this piece truly exceptional. The white marble top is inset. Having four drawers, three of equal size in the lower section and a narrow drawer in the top. Standing on toupie feet mounted in ormolu. The attribution to Saunier (1735-1807), matre in 1752, rests on a series of commodes of similar form that are in museums.
The use of inlaid columns with capitals mounted with gilt bronze, is typical of the attention to detail associated with Saunier's best work. One of the finest examples we have ever been privileged enough to handle.
A truly special piece of furniture of the highest quality.
