18th Century Oak Dresser Dresser Base
18th Century Oak Dresser Base with inlaid inverted anchors and good proportions.
The dresser base of fine golden colour and with exceptional figure to the timber. It is of breakfront form with turned columns flanking the central section and stands on plain bracket feet. The drawer and cupboard configuration are more complex than usual, suggesting an experienced and top quality provincial workshop.
The drawer fronts have inlaid strung detail. The cupboard doors and the sides are panelled.
The unusual and interesting features are the inlaid metal inverted anchors to the front of each cupboard door. Rather than being used as a maritime motif as might be expected, these inverted anchors are thought to symbolise steadfastness and hope in tribulation.
