Fine quality French 18th Century kingwood mazarin commode.
Mazarin commodes refer to the specific feature of shaped front styles which lead down to the feet.
This unique addition to the commode was first introduced in the Louis XIV period, when Andre Charles Boulle gifted the King a commode in this style for use at the Grand Trianon at Versailles. These commodes are likely so-called after Cardinal Mazarin, who was Louis XIV's Chief Minister.
This example demonstrates superb cabinet-making, with a marquetry diamond-shaped panel to the side and cross-bounded subtly breakfront drawers.
The three drawers themselves feature ebonised panels with fine brass inlay, and later brass handles which have clearly been a part of the whole for a very long time.
The top of this commode has bevelled corners and an ebonised border, with the pièce de résistance a stunning inset marble top. The whole rests on raised bracket feet.
This is an extremely fine piece of French 18th Century furniture, and would be a fantastic addition to a living or bedroom.
