19th Century Mahal Carpet

  • H: 433 cm (170 1/2")
  • W: 330 cm (129 15/16")

A stylish Mahal carpet with age-old charm and vegetable-dyed colours that would blend in a wide variety of spaces.

This attractive rug belongs to a group of carpets specifically commissioned in west Persia during the late 19th/early 20th Century to complement European furnishing tastes. They are unique due to their grand scale drawings, quiet formality and use of soft, understated colours.

Often seen in grand stately homes in Europe and the UK.

Antique Mahal carpets work well in modern spaces as they have the aesthetic ability to unite and balance both classic and contemporary design elements.

This early Mahal carpet has a rare ivory field complementing the earthy colour palette of the balanced monochrome drawing, framed by a wide artistic border.

This 19th Century example has some age-related wear/patina but is in very good practical condition for everyday use, still retaining its original plain borders on all sides. Underlay is recommended to keep the carpet flat on the floor and to prolong its life.
