19th Century Print of a Red-Necked Grebe by Sepp & Nozeman

  • H: 65.5 cm (25 13/16")
  • W: 49.5 cm (19 1/2")

Wonderful early 19th Century print of a Red-Necked Grebe - titled 'Podiceps (Colymbus) Rubricollis'.

Presented in bespoke hand-painted reeded frame with hessian mount and AR70 Artglass for optimal clarity.

The red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena) is a migratory aquatic bird found in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Its wintering Habitat is largely restricted to calm waters just beyond the waves around ocean coasts, although some birds may winter on large lakes.

Grebes prefer shallow bodies of freshwater such as lakes, marshes or fish ponds as breeding sites. This print originates from 'Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huisdouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven", Amsterdam, 1770-1829 by C. Nozeman, M. Houttuyn and J.C. Sepp. This is the most important and first study in the Netherlands of ornithology at that time. The birds are depicted as they are in life, said to be depicted close to life-sized and in their environment.
