19th Century Ziegler Mahal Carpet

  • H: 426 cm (167 3/4")
  • W: 313 cm (123 1/4")

19th Century Ziegler Mahal carpet featuring a unique drawing in comparison with other classic Anatolian carpets.

The design characteristics are derived from earlier Azerbaijan carpets of the 18th Century where each drawing in the field is cleverly repeated in different shapes and colour combinations, framed by simple borders. The rare pinky-red field complements the harmonious vegetable-dyed colours beautifully.

This Anatolian carpet is in very well preserved condition for everyday use, still retaining its plain borders on all four sides.

These 20th Century Anatolian carpets have a rich heritage of rug weaving which began in the 13th Century and were amongst the first wave of Oriental carpets that were exported to Europe.

Many were seen in iconic paintings of many European masters including Memling, Lotto and Hans Holbein. Today these decorative carpets are highly appreciated for their simple designs, soft colours and lustrous wool.

A charming example to blend in a wide variety of settings.
