19th Century Azerbaijani Runner
Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving going back several centuries. Due to its geographic location, it stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their richness and beauty. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after and well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours.
This example is an exquisite 19th Century Azerbaijani runner, with an expressive naivety. Its light terracotta ground works to compliment the bold abstract motifs, repeated in irregular forms across the field in a diverse range of shapes and colours, and framed by an intricately drawn border. The rug features a rich palette, with hues ranging from duck-egg blues to deep reds, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes.
This early Azerbaijani runner is in very good practical condition, with its outer borders and fringes all well retained. A charming and characteful tribal piece, that would compliment a variety of settings.
