19th Century Cast Iron and Marble Console Table by James Yates

  • H: 83 cm (32 11/16")
  • W: 105 cm (41 5/16")
  • D: 51 cm (20 1/16")

Incredibly beautiful and rare mid 19th Century cast iron and marble topped console table, by James Yates of Rotherham. Circa 1850.

This console table is very much in the Rococo revival manner which was popular in the mid 19th Century.

The Rococo style is evident in the robust double C-scroll legs which terminate in large scroll feet. The twin scroll stretcher is centred by a large carbochon.

The base of this table has been painted many, many times. Retaining its original marble top, the whole has weathered most attractively.

Although this is an interior piece, it has spent many years outside as a garden table and has a wonderful authenticity.

The overall condition is good. One top corner to the base is a later replacement.

James Yates (died 1881), founded the firm Yates, Haywood & Co. The company was an iron foundry based at Effingham Works in Rotherham.

Yates was noted for his high-quality domestic ironware.

This is a beautiful piece with a robust construction and great history behind it.
