Early 19th Century 'rat de cave' cellar candlestick.
Rat de cave, or cellar rat, candlesticks were used to light French wine cellars in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
These functional yet beautiful pieces are comprised of a wrought iron corkscrew spiral, on a base. This spiral form helped to control the height of the candle flame.
Lovely aged patina. Unique and primitive decorative piece.
