19th Century Grand Tour Marble Statue of Diane

  • H: 71 cm (27 15/16")
  • W: 23 cm (9 1/16")
  • D: 20 cm (7 7/8")

Early 19th Century Grand Tour statue of Diane de Gabies.

This beautiful statue is finely carved in Carrara marble.

Diane is shown stood next to a tree stump with her hair tied back and her head tilted to the right where she is fixing the clasp on her tunic.

This is a copy of a Roman marble statue dating to the Hellenistic period. The statue was discovered by the English artist Gavin Hamilton in 1792 in the grounds of the Borghese family residence in the village of Gabies, near Rome.

The antique marble was later sold to Napoleon I by the Borghese and in 1820 it was sent to the Musée du Louvre where it remains.

The fashion for young men to complete a 'Grand Tour' of Europe in the late 18th Century led to a fascination with classical art. The 18th and 19th centuries therefore saw an influx of statuary reproductions like this one.

This statue is in wonderful condition and will be a beautiful and serene feature in any setting.
