19th Century Hand-Blocked Paper Screen

  • H: 174 cm (68 1/2")
  • W: 205 cm (80 11/16")

19th Century hand block-printed paper screen.

This screen has a hinged wood frame comprising four panels, each measuring 50.5cm wide.

The paper panels are printed with a quatrefoil petal pattern, with beautiful geometric symmetry, against a worn blue ground.

Resting on carved block feet.

Block-printing by hand was one of the earliest forms of textile printing in Europe. This method was not fully replaced by copper roller printing until the second half of the 19th Century.

This screen would make a striking sculptural piece and a functional room divider.
