19th Century Serapi-Heriz Carpet
The term ‘Serapi’ belongs to a subset of high-end Heriz carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, known for their higher quality weaves and simpler, more refined designs. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs, and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs.
In our experience, Serapi-Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room. This c. 1870 Serapi carpet is a fine example of its type. Being an earlier piece, it employs an fine, creative colour scheme, particularly the rare olive green tone in the medallion and in the wide border which frames the central field, with its ivory spandrels, which serves to compliment the bold, graphic drawing in its design.
All of these colours have been produced with organic vegetable dyes, which have taken on a subtle patina with age. This carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides.
A beautiful carpet, with a sense of charming naivety, which would add personality to any space.
