Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are well known as among the most distinct, and thus highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs, and the scale and high-quality craftsmanship one would expect of a Persian workshop piece.
This handsome early 20th Century example boasts a charming all-over design, rather than the conventional central medallion motif, with an unusual stamped floral motif, perhaps inspired by European Arts & Crafts weavings, repeated across the ivory field.
Its earthy palette includes warm ochre tones of cornflower blue, sage green and camel, all framed by a wide terracotta border. Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides – its colours have taken on a characterful patina with age.
An attractive tribal weaving, to add charm and personality to a wide range of interiors.
