20th Century Handwoven Aubusson Carpet
20th Century French handwoven Aubusson carpet.
The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.
This vintage example has been finely hand-woven to a remarkable quality, faithful to 19th Century weavings, featuring a wonderfully crisp floral design across a pleasant ivory field in an understated palette, framed by a fresh border in pink and pale green hues, which has gracefully aged over the last thirty years. A lovely piece, in very good practical condition for everyday use. This sophisticated carpet would make a fine addition to a variety of interiors.
