20th Century Portuguese Needlepoint Carpet
Among Portugal's textiles, perhaps none are as widely sought after as its needlepoint rugs - termed Arraiolos carpets - such as this vintage example. Finely handwoven some time in the last 30 years.
It features a series of scrolling floral and vegetal motifs in a wonderful variety of fresh colours; delicate tones of green with lavender, red ochre and cobalt blue accents over an ivory ground, framed by a wide two-part border borrowing from the characteristic designs of earlier 19th Century English needlepoint works.
A wonderful piece which would make a fine addition to a tasteful interior.
Portugal is home to one of Europe's most longstanding and prestigious weaving traditions. Serving as a centre for the production of high-value, intricately designed carpets since at least the 15th century. Supposedly originally introduced to the country by the Moors, during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian peninsula.
