20th Century Qum Carpet
SKU
RT4937879
An unusual carpet from the 1930s, masterfully woven in the renowned workshops of Qum.
This piece showcases a striking stamped motif, repeated in an earthy two-tone palette, in soft cornflower blue and terracotta, over an ivory field, and framed by a wide, decorative border. Its muted palette and soft ground, in combination with the open, all-over design, lend the work a rare feeling of space and balance; a rare and creative piece, it combines the craftmanship of a workshop weaving with the charming naivety of a 19th Century tribal piece.
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a repuation for the high-quality of the wool, often Merino, from which they are made, and the elegance and precision of their designs – this piece is certainly no exception: retained in very good condition for everyday use, the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders retained on all sides – its vegetable-dyed colours have taken on a charming patina with age.
A truly outstanding example, this rug would be a prized addition to any collection.
