Georgian Longcase Clock

  • H: 212 cm (83 7/16")
  • W: 57.5 cm (22 5/8")
  • D: 31 cm (12 3/16")

Late Georgian 30-hour longcase clock, circa 1780.

This beautiful clock features raised yellow lacquered ground and parcel-gilt decoration. Particularly attractive panels adorn the door and the plinth base. A decorative frieze sits below the cornice and borders the clock face.

The 30-hour clock was built using the same mechanical idea as lantern clocks. They are wound by pulling on a rope or chain in order to lift up the weight- this mechanism can be seen in this example when you open the door.

This piece has a circular brass dial, sat within an intricate brass border. The outer border of the dial displays five-minute measurements, whilst the inner border displays the hour in Roman numerals.

The dial is inscribed 'John Pratt, Helmdon' in reference to the movement.

The attention to detail throughout this clock is charming, and it is a fantastic piece of Georgian furniture.
