19th Century Ersari Carpet
Wonderful Ersari carpet with lustrous wool and fine weaving engenders the clarity of its drawing.
Ersari carpets of Central Asia have a long and rich history in the world of antique rugs. They are widely appreciated for their quality, use of rich colours, and their distinctive 'elephant foot' patterns.
They are charming, durable pieces.
This is an early example, it not only has better quality wool, but its pattern is simpler and more naive in comparison to the later examples. The muted red terracotta field is attractive with a natural colour variation (abrash) giving depth and great richness to the simple drawing.
There is a touch of green which is uncommon for this type of weaving. It is in excellent condition, still retaining all original four borders and kilim fringes at both ends which are rare features for a rug dating c.1890.
A classic example with tribal charm to blend in a wide variety of settings.
