20th Century Arras Garden Bench
Early 20th Century wrought-iron garden bench made in Arras, Northern France.
This bench has a wonderful ergonomic shape with legs terminating in horse hoof feet and the original maker's plaque. The northern town of Arras was famous for its iron foundries, which produced this beautiful style of furniture up until the Second World War.
They used a unique method of extrusion - 'demi tube' - which gave the iron a rounded finish. This allowed surface water to drain and prevent rust. It also made for a much more comfortable seat!
Arras furniture peppered private and public outdoor spaces in France from the start of production in 1840 until it ceased in the mid-20th Century. Combining durability and a stylish aesthetic, as seen on this beautiful bench.
