Pioneered by Walter Nichols, an American in China whose workshops were active from 1924 into the 1930s, Chinese Art Deco carpets represent a real high point in the history of 20th Century design.

These pieces are highly sought after, standing out for their unique combination of traditional Chinese elements, alongside design motifs borrowed from the Art Deco movement, which dominated the decorative arts of America and Europe during the period.

This example features an unusual soft aubergine field, framed by a duck-egg blue and grey-purple border, decorated with two blossom tree designs in the opposite corners worked in bright colours, creating a playful contrast with the carpet’s otherwise stark, monochrome palette.

An outstanding piece, of a rare and impressive size, to compliment either a contemporary or a classic interior.
