Collection of five 19th Century 'rat de cave' cellar candlesticks.
Rat de cave, or cellar rat, candlesticks were used to light French Burgandy wine cellars in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The rat tail-like handles are designed to be hung on the rim of a wine barrel.
These functional yet beautiful pieces are comprised of a wrought iron corkscrew spiral, on a wooden base. Each candlestick has a spiralling lifter to control the height of the candle.
A unique and primitive decorative collection.
