Charming set of French late 19th Century pétanque balls, circa 1880s.
Pétanque, also called boules, is based on the very old French game of jeu Provençal, where balls are rolled as close as possible to the target (the jack, or cochonnet).
This metal set is full of social history. It can be used for its original purpose today or merely for display and a talking point.
