Square 19th Century Feraghan Carpet
Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th Century as they were created in the same region as the equally popular and much sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets.
Both are often seen in grand European houses because of their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours.
Feraghan carpets stand out since they artfully balance both tribal and formal elements of rug design.
This particular early Feraghan carpet has a rare ivory field that complements the varied colour composition of the monochrome drawing. It is also distinguished by its wide terracotta border. The colour combination is entirely natural vegetable-dyed which have nicely aged and still retaining all its original borders on all four sides, a remarkable feature for a rug dating to the late 19th Century.
A stylish example with a rare squarish shape has a quiet formality that can blend with a wide range of settings.
