American 18th Century Painted Chest on Stand
A rare and original late 18th Century American, possibly Pennsylvanian, chest on stand in the Adam taste, circa 1800.
Of country house proportions, the whole piece is made in cedar with straight tapered legs standing on spade feet
This chest features stunning smokework decoration. Soot was one of the earliest materials used for decoration and smoke painting became a prominent decorative technique for furniture in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
Smoke could be manipulated into a variety of patterns, with this chest featuring dark grey smudged dappling effect against a yellow background.
This chest is in a very good condition with natural weathering from use.
