Interview with Andrew Purchase
How would you describe your style?
Hard one, it has changed so much but style or quality always shines though.
When did you starting dealing in antiques?
Don’t ask! (41 years ago).
What inspired you to become an antique dealer?
I was in a dead end job, and thought being an antique dealer would be much easier – safe to say, it isn’t!
What was your first ever job?
Dental technician…the thought of making false teeth for the rest of my life wasn’t very inspiring.
What is your favourite thing about the industry?
Being able to own such beautiful pieces – even if it is just temporarily before they sell.
What is your greatest professional achievement?
Making a living through antiques – you have to work hard but it is fun.
If you weren’t an antique dealer, what would you be doing?
Believe it or not – a teacher or an author.
What is your most treasured possession?
Have sold them all. Big secret treasured possession is my batman collection. My wife hates it so it’s in the loft!
If you could go back in time, which era would you chose to live in?
What’s wrong with right here and now? If pushed…between the wars.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the antiques world?
Think long and hard. When it is good it’s very good, but you do get dry spells. Just work hard, enjoy it, and hope to win the lottery so you can buy even more antiques!
