French 19th Century Books

  • H: 20 cm (7 7/8")
  • W: 13 cm (5 1/8")
  • D: 10 cm (3 15/16")

Bundle of French 19th Century books with marbled paper covers.

Three of these books are by Henri Ghéon and make up his three-part work, Les Jeux de L'Enfer et du Ciel, which means Games of Hell and Heaven.

Ghéon was a 19th Century French playwright, critic and poet. His plays sought to make religious topics, in particular the saints and the gospel, more accessible to the young.

Les Jeux de L'Enfer et du Ciel is about the Curé d'Ars, the Parish Priest of Ars.

Beautifully marbled covers. Once a common material, marbled paper was made by floating paints on a liquid in a tray. Despite the best efforts of bookbinders to make consistent covers for their wares, no two designs were ever identical.
