Excellent 19th Century camphor wooden chest.
Featuring brass hardware of exceptional quality throughout, with intricate floral decoration to the central fastening and handles on the side.
Camphor chests were used throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries to house a variety of items, from blankets to papers. However, most commonly they were used to transport tea, silks and other goods from China to Europe and America.
Camphor was the wood of choice for these chests, as it exudes a fresh scent similar to eucalyptus which acts as a repellent against moths.
This is a very fine chest which offers plenty of storage and vintage charm to present day interior.
