Fine quality walnut cheval mirror, circa 1900. 

This large-scale French mirror is an excellent example of its type.

The cheval mirror shares the name of the French word for horse, due to being mounted on four legs. These dressing mirrors were first made in France, evolving from the first free-standing 'toilet mirrors.' 

This example features beautifully carved foliate decoration to the frame, with a crest to the bonnet top. Swivel screws allow the glass to be tilted back and forth, so that a whole outfit could be admired. 

Cheval mirrors are a sophisticated and traditional feature in the home, perfect for filling a bedroom corner or hallway.
