Contemporary Anatolian Carpet of Mid-Century Design
Anatolia, the western region of Turkey, has a long-standing rug-weaving tradition, dating at least as far back as the 13th Century. As the explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘Here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets, and in the most beautiful colours.’ It is these carpets, among the first to reach the European market in the Early Modern era, that can be spotted in many of the paintings of the Old Masters, including those of Holbein, Vermeer, and Reubens.
This contemporary example, weaved according to the sensibilities of Mid-Century Modernist design, boasts a drawing evocative of Beni Ourain weavings. With a naive overall pattern in a soft golden hue atop a sky-blue field, all in natural-dyed wool.
This piece brings together ancient weaving practices with modern sophistication and style, its subtle variation in colour giving great depth and richness to an otherwise simple, monochrome drawing. In excellent condition.
This Contemporary Anatolian Carpet is a perfect addition to a wide variety of interiors.
