Early 18th Century Maltese Walnut and Marquetry Commode
Fine Early 18th Century Walnut and Marquetry Commode of Bow and Block Front Shape (possibly Italian).
This highly unusual commode is possibly the result of a bespoke commission. With its combination of block front and bow fronted shaping, the central section protruding as on a typical block front design but the drawer fronts are bow shaped, the piece has something of an Italian feel to it.
It has a large overhanging top decorated with geometric veneers inlaid in a circle in the centre. The same geometric pattern is used on the sides. The drawer fronts also use modified versions of the same motif, and having brass handles and escutcheon plates. Standing on flattened, ebonised bun fee.
The side pilasters are set at an angle. An impressive piece of furniture.
