Early 18th Century Spanish Walnut Cabinet
Extremely interesting Early 18th Century Spanish walnut food cupboard.
Designs of this sort seem to have been produced from the 16th Century onwards but this example dates to the early 18th Century. The cupboard consists of a moulded, projecting cornice above two doors with spindle "windows".
This was designed as a sort of larder, keeping food safe from animals and out of the sun. Beneath the doors are two drawers with interesting geometric panelled motifs and, below them, two large panelled cupboard doors, also incorporating a variety of decorative motifs.
Inside both top and bottom sections are shelves.
The sides of the cupboard employ an arched, panelled motif and the escutcheons, hinges locks and key are all original and made of iron. This piece has acquired a wonderful patination due to centuries of use. As a result the piece has a wonderful surface that only time and hard use can create.
This is an extremely attractive piece of furniture that can be used in a variety of ways today such as as a bookcase, display cabinet or as a multi-purpose storage solution.
