Early 19th Century camphor wood chest.
This chest is an example of colonial furniture that would have been made for transporting goods from China to Europe.
Camphor was always the wood of choice for such chests, as its naturally sweet-smelling qualities make it perfect for storing luxuries like silk, tea, and porcelain.
This is a particularly lovely example for the brass ornamentation, including strapwork to the sides, studs, and carrying handles.
The star feature is the highly decorative large pierced escutcheon with its key to the centre.
The hinged lid lifts to reveal a spacious and deep interior in good condition.
The whole rests on ebonised bun feet.
The timber has great colour, with some old marks and wear which are clearly seen in the photos and don't detract from the piece as a whole.
This would make a great alternative coffee table or could be placed at the foot of the bed for storing blankets and linens.
