Early 19th Century George III English Mahogany Bookcase
George III English Mahogany Hepplewhite Bookcase of Small Proportions, with Gothic Glazing Bars. Circa 1800.
A small well-proportioned bookcase with a low waist, inlaid cupboard doors in the base section and fine colour. Having excellent astragal glazing bars in the upper section of pronounced gothic influence. The lower section consists of a cupboard and the doors are decorated with two ovals of highly figured curly mahogany, their frames set with straighter grained flamed mahogany laid at an angle.
The same technique is also used on the centre of the glazed doors in the top section, resulting in a herringbone effect of veneers where the doors meet. The surface throughout has attained a lovely colour and patination. Standing on splayed feet connected by a serpentine apron.
Balanced and light in its design, it is wonderfully proportioned.
