Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving going back several centuries.

Due to its geographic location, it stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their richness and beauty. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours. This early 20th Century example, dating to c. 1930, is among the most unusual, most charming pieces from its region that we have had the pleasure of having in our collection for some time.

While most carpets of this type and era use the conventional geometric motifs, it boasts a creative all-over drawing, with a grand scale pattern inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th Century, in a wide variety of vegetable dyes – these include tones of cornflower blue, olive green, ochre red and muted indigo, all set across a rare ivory ground. The lustrous hand-spun wool, and the high density of knots in its weave, lend a crisp clarity to the design which, combined with its spontaneous use of colour and unusual composition, suggest this was likely originally made as a special commission.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.

A sophisticated tribal weaving, with a highly creative design, to suit a wide variety of interior styles.
