Early 20th Century Bessarabian Kilim
The tradition of Bessarabian kilim weaving dates to the later period of Ottoman rule over the Eastern Balkans. Broadly, the territory now covered by Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova and is known for an interesting combination of design elements from Anatolian carpets, as well as from sophisticated European weavings.
This early 20th Century example is particularly charming, featuring a muted salmon-terracotta field with abstracted geometric floral motifs repeated across the field. Framed by a wide turquoise-toned border of generous proportion. The large scale of the frame relative to the field is a particularly attractive feature of this kilim. Its restrained colour palette beautifully complemented by the piece's balanced and refined composition, with a subtle variation in colour adding to the overall charm of the work.
This stylish kilim is in very good condition for everyday use, sure to enhance any sophisticated interior.
