Early 20th Century Kashan Carpet
A skilfully woven and understated Kashan rug, dating to c. 1930.
This piece features a soft ivory-coloured ground, with pastel blue and terracotta floral motifs, framed by a wide, intricately designed border. The city of Kashan, from which this carpet originates, is well known as among the most important of the Persian rug-weaving centers.
Rising to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty, Kashan was responsible for many of the most exquisite textiles of the Classical period, and continued production well into the early 20th Century.
This example employs a muted palette and simplified composition, with a pleasant, balanced drawing, lending the work an effortless elegance.
Well preserved, its borders all neatly intact, this charming rug has the versatility to blend in a variety of settings.
