Early 20th Century Qum Carpet
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the unique creativity of their designs, as well as high-quality of the wool, often Merino, from which they are made.
This fine c. 1930s example employs a charming all-over botteh (or, paisley) design - originally an ancient Zoroastrian motif, representing the evergreen cypress tree, a symbol of everlasting life, and often found in Arts & Crafts style weavings of the 19th and 20th Centuries - in sage green and tan, in ivory bands repeated across an ochre field, and framed by a wide, decorative border.
A charming and unusual design, worked in gracefully aged vegetable dyes. In very good practical condition for everyday use.
A handsome carpet, with a creative flair which would lend itself to a wide variety of settings.
