Early 20th Century Signed Tabriz Persian Carpet

A handsome Tabriz carpet, dating to the early 20th Century, with a wonderfully dynamic design, characteristic of earlier weavings of the 17th-century, and bearing the signature of a well-known workshop artist of its era. The design features large-scale patterns that lend the work a sense of carefree spontaneity. Each motif in the central field is creatively repeated in a variety of different forms and shades, across an ivory ground which provides a perfect complimentary backdrop to the gracefully aged, vegetable-dyed hues, framed by a wide, soft ochre colour border. The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design. This carpet, from the early 20th Century, is a particularly rare and sophisticated example of its type, since it demonstrates a much greater creative freedom than one would expect of a Tabriz rug from its era. This antique Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders on all sides. An attractive example, in a rare format, which would make a wonderful addition to a tasteful setting.
