Antique Veramin carpets are widely recognized as among the most exceptional Persian workshop weavings, best known for their remarkable quality, fine crisp drawings, wide variety of rich vegetable-dyed colours, and a range of characteristic designs that set these carpets apart from those from the neighboring regions.
This example, dating to the early 20th Century, boasts a rare salmon ground, as opposed to the conventional blue ground found in standard Veramin weavings. Woven in high grade lustrous wool, the pale muted field serves as an elegant backdrop to the variety of vegetable dyed colours in its drawing; the palette includes shades of midnight blue, charcoal grey, ivory, cornflower blue, and ochre, framed by a wide, ivory-toned border of great proportions. The all-over pomegranate blossom design is derived from earlier Azerbaijani rugs of the 18th century, symbolizing prosperity, fertility, and eternal life.
Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, this carpet maintains its original fringes and outer borders on all sides – remarkable for a piece of this age.
An timeless c. 1900 Veramin Carpet, with an understated sophistication that would lend itself well to a wide variety of settings.
