English 17th Century Bristol Delft Royal Commemorative Plate
King William III and Queen Mary II period (1694-1700) Bristol Delft tin glaze plate.
A rare royal commemorative plate of the then Princess Anne and Prince George of Denmark. The P and PS for Prince and Princess.
Most likely produced after the death of Queen Mary in 1694, to show support for her sister Anne to continue the succession of the Stuart line and Protestant religion. Queen Mary's husband King William died in 1702, then Anne became Queen and reigned until her death in 1714.
The sponged glaze decoration typical of the Brislington, Bristol technique. Not used in similar English Delft plates produced in Liverpool or London at the time.
Has the usual rim chipping and a fine hairline but essentially in very good condition for a Delft plate of this period. A similar poly-chrome version of this same pattern is held in the Ashmolean museum.
