Fine Continetial Aubusson Carpet of Savonnerie Design
The town of Aubusson has long been famous for the high quality of its textiles. The reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.
Styled in the Aubusson tradition, this elegant example has characteristics of French Savonnerie carpets of the 18th Century, featuring a creative all-over design in a natural-dyed colour palette of green, ivory, terracotta, and sky-blue accents.
The composition of this piece is made still more remarkable by how fine a weave it has, maintaining a vivid clarity in its drawing. A highly decorative example to compliment a sophisticated setting.
