Hong Kong Harbour, Edward Seago
Oil on board of Hong Kong Harbour by Edward Seago (1910-74), signed bottom left.
Seago was an English artist, known for both watercolours and oil paintings. He worked in a late impressionistic style and his collectors have included Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip.
He transferred his talent for landscapes from England to Hong Kong when he was commissioned by the Far Eastern Trading and Shipping Group to paint six pictures for a new boardroom. Although he was appalled by the poverty he witnessed in Hong Kong, Seago found it a rich source of inspiration.
He used his distinctive, carefully observed colour modulation and realism to paint striking paintings of Hong Kong harbour which were both a continuation of his style and very different due to the new surroundings.
