Large 1930s Persian Qum Carpet
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving cities, Qum only established itself a centre of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the high-quality of the wool, often Merino, from which they are made, and the elegance and precision of their designs.
This piece is certainly no exception: retained in very good condition for everyday use, the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail. This example, dating to the 1930s, showcases an intricate repeating pattern, rendered in a restrained earthy palette of champagne and tan, with subtle detailing in salmon-pink, ivory, and muted blue grey. Its colours and soft ground, in combination with the open, all-over design, lend the work a rare feeling of space and balance; a creative piece, its design echoes the pleasant simplicity of earlier 19th Century workshop weavings.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, its vegetable-dyed colours having taken on a charming patina with age. Effortlessly sophisticated, this understated piece is perfectly suited for a variety of tasteful settings.
