Large Mid 20th Century Terracotta Canova Lion

  • H: 44 cm (17 5/16")
  • W: 94 cm (38")
  • D: 36 cm (14 3/16")

Beautifully modelled, mid 20th Century fired terracotta lion.

This lion, with its head resting on its paws with an endearing expression, is very reminiscent of the ones produced by Canova.

The neoclassical sculptor made a pair of marble lions for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome. One of the pair was portrayed in a similar stance to this sculpture.

Close in style to ones produced by the Royal Weston Potteries, this one is not stamped. English mid 20th Century.

The terracotta gives this lion a lovely warmth, complimenting the attention to detail in the face and mane.

Sculptures make a wonderful garden feature, but can look equally effective and very striking in large indoor spaces.
