Large Pair of 19th Century Terracotta Lions

Wonderful pair of 19th Century buff terracotta recumbent lions.
Of good scale and bold proportions, each with long flowing manes and heads turned to Sinister and Dexter, outstretched paws, rear haunches drawn up and tails curled round to the fronts. In well preserved condition with only surface weathering and no breaks, a few minor historic chips.
By the renowned fire clayworks J M Craig, Kilmarnock. Circa 1850. The two brothers, James and Matthew formed the firm in 1847 on the death of their father Matthew. They carried on his business of fireclayworks and brickmaking at Dean Quarry in the grounds of Dean Castle.
