Wonderful Large 19th Century English Regency Rosewood Library/Writing Table with Original Leather Top by Bertram & Son, Dean St, Oxford St W.
This table is of exceptional quality, constructed in rosewood with satinwood and boxwood stringing and has its original green tooled leather writing surface to the top.
There are four drawers to the frieze, two at the front and two at the back with small pull handles. The drawer linings are made with mahogany, a sign of great quality. Supported by tapered end supports on unusual feet with semi-concealed brass castors.
The firm of Bertram & Son London was established in 1830 and were listed as; upholsterer, looking glass maker, carver, gilder and cabinet maker. They participated in various exhibitions including the Paris Exhibition in 1878, for which they received an honourable mention. They furnished some of the rooms at the Exhibition of the Domestic Electric Lighting Company at the Crystal Palace (1 April 1882). At the 1884 Exhibition of Furniture, Royal School of Needlework, Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London, the firm displayed Chippendale and Sheraton style furniture.
This is a great design of table without a stretcher making it very elegant.
